Best known as an illustrator of historical books, Alonzo Chappel (1828-1887) in 1858 painted this scene of the infamous Massacre at Wyoming. Chappell's depiction of colonial loyalists and their Indian allies' battle with patriot militiamen captures the viciousness of the conflict that erupted on the Pennsylvania frontier during the American Revolution.
